0 commentsIt’s not everybody’s idea of the perfect Sunday afternoon, but 88 runners competed in the Isle of Arran Half Marathon last weekend, clocking in some good times and enjoying a fine — if a wee bit gruelling — circuit from Blackwaterfoot around Machrie Moor and back to the Kinloch.
Mike Mellor was the first local to cross the line in 1 hour 39 minutes and 3 seconds to win the ‘first local’ shield, a prize which was dominated in recent years by Gordon Allsop. The race was won overall by Jamie Findlay from Cambuslang, who trotted through 13 miles in just over 73 ½ minutes — an impressive average of 5m 40s per mile. The first lady to finish was Rebecca Johnson with 1 hour 24 minutes and 53 seconds.
Most of the runners were attached to clubs off-island, but there were a few hardy local runners who took part. Deborah Robertson, Barbara Crawford and Lois Robertson crossed the line together in a sponsored race for charity and veteran racer Tommy Gilmore from the Ormidale completed the race in 1 hour 48 minutes.
The next big race on the running calendar is the Urie Loch Hill Race on 20th July as part of the Lamlash Gala Week.
