Do you ever find that it is really hard to get rid of something old and replace it with something new? It’s not the getting new things that is the problem for me, but the saying goodbye to the old!

I remember when we got rid of our sitting room carpet; a dull, brown thing I had never really realised I liked until I was told it was being replaced by a new, bright, red carpet. I cried a lot about that . ( I was very young then).

My room is full of useless junk such as a couple of tiny dresses from when I was a toddler, that I couldn’t bring myself go give away like my other old garments.
A couple of mounhs ago I fought hard to try and keep a damp, bad-smelling, twenty-year- old sofa — another battle I lost miserably to my parents. But I did manage to get a bit of fabric from the arm of the sofa to remember it by.

I have a pocket in my water-proof jacket full of little things to remind me of old friends, some of whom are long gone; a twig from my favourite tree that fell down, a bit of the original wall of the Lochranza Kirkcare houses where I wait for the bus, a bit of the old High School Art Department wall that I fished out through the fence, a plastic ice-cream spoon from the Edinburgh King’s Theatre …etc.

Speaking of school, that’s another thing I miss — my old Primary School. It was a big thing moving up to the High School and it involved a lot of those horrible goodbyes.

But no matter what, we will all end up moving away from hundreds of things we liked and will miss, but I guess that’s life!

This week’s Arran Voice was by Katharine O’Donnelly who pops out of an elf hole every blue moon.
