Sannox CC left waiting….again.

Sannox CC were mightily cheesed-off by the second failure of Victoria, Glasgow, to turn up.

Sannox cricket club was rightly cheesed off after a no-show for the second time in two seasons by Glasgow club Victoria.

Hearing from Raja, the visiting captain, that 14 of the team were travelling to Arran, Sannox CC went down to meet them from the ferry, only to hear that they 'had been turned away in Ardrossan because the boat was too full’.

The pier office in Brodick said there were only 700 people on board. No-one had been turned away. The truth was that the team had tried to bring cars over, but there was no space for 2 of the 3 vehicles, and by the time they tried to board as foot passengers, the gangplank had been lifted. ‘It was slightly our mistake’, admitted Raja. But the same thing had happened two years earlier.

Sannox CC club secretary Tim Pomeroy pointed out how much work a fixture involves. ‘Grass-cutting the entire pitch, cutting and rolling a wicket and nets, preparing lunch for more than 22 people to include scorers and umpires, the organising of lifts from the ferry ... Lay members like Audrey Allsop bake cakes and help out with raffles ..The very least a visiting team can do is cancel well in advance.'

The Sannox players played an ‘in house’ match on a scorching afternoon that reached 28C. And until temperatures cool, another fixture between Sannox and the unreliable Victoria is unlikely.

The next Sannox match is scheduled for Sunday 17th June against Mid Argyll, starting at 11.30am. For more information phone 600287
